Dear 5th Grade Parents,

We are starting an exciting unit about colonial life! Students will work in groups to complete a project about one of the following colonial topics: education, trades, clothing, food, medicine, entertainment, daily life, or slavery. The project will be completed in two phases. During Phase I, students will write a group research report about their topic. During Phase II, students will participate in a Colonial Fair, during which each group will set up a booth in the auditorium to teach visitors (parents, guests, and other students) about the topic they researched. Each group is required to have artifacts (models, samples, tools, and other items) on display that relate to their topic in order to make their booth as authentic as possible. For example, the education group may have a quill pen, ink, hornbook, dunce cap, and other related items on display. Each student is required to bring at least two artifacts related to their specific research question. Your help is appreciated in assisting your child with making and/or gathering artifacts for the project. All artifacts (with the exception of perishable items) are due on Thursday, January 26.

Students will be doing most of their work for the colonial project on a wiki. A wiki is a website that anyone with access and permission can edit. You can learn more about how wikis work by watching the YouTube video, "Wikis is Plain English," which is located here: http://bit.ly/tsd2V

The wiki that I created for the colonial project is located here: http://noahhorizon.pbworks.com/

It is password protected, so in order to view it, you will need to follow these five steps:

          1) Click on the "Request access" button.

2) Enter your email address in the first box.

3) Type your name in the message box.

       4) Confirm by entering the letter that PBworks asks you to enter.

       5) Click the "Send to administrator" button.

You will receive an email from PBworks with information on how to set up your account once your request has been approved. The email may go into your SPAM folder, so please double check it and make PBworks an approved sender.

The Colonial Fair will take place on Friday, February 3 at 1:00 p.m. Students are asked to wear colonial clothing on that day.

Boys’ Costume

  • A plain white, long-sleeved shirt
  • A plain vest
  • Dark-colored pants (not jeans)- roll them up to your knees or cut them just below the knees to create breeches
  • Long, white or dark-colored socks that come over your knees
  • Knit cap, wide-brimmed hat, or tricorn hat

Girls’ Costume

  • A long skirt (solid, striped, floral, plaid, or checkered) with a long-sleeved plain white blouse OR a long dress with solid, striped, floral, plaid, or checkered fabric
  • White socks or tights
  • A long apron that ties at your waist (solid, striped, floral, plaid, or checkered)
  • White mob cap
  • A handkerchief or cloth napkin, tied at the neck (optional)

There is no need to buy an outfit! One option is to transform the clothing that you already have in your closets at home into a colonial outfit. Another option is to contact a 6th grade parent or the parent of a recent graduate to see if their child still has a colonial costume that you can borrow. Below are pictures of students' colonial costumes from last year for your reference.

If you have any questions about the colonial project, please feel free to email me at tnoah@echohorizon.org.

                                                                          Fare thee well,
