What was it like to live in colonial times?

Here's your chance to find out!

Through this project, you will learn about what life was like in colonial times and how a person's social class (gentry, middling sort, lower/lesser sort, or enslaved) impacted their lifestyle. The project will be divided into two phases. During Phase I, you will work with a group to research one of the following colonial topics: education, trades, clothing, food, medicine, entertainment, daily life, or slavery. During Phase II, your group will participate in a Colonial Fair, during which you will dress up in colonial clothing and set up a booth in the auditorium (complete with artifacts and a presentation board) to inform visitors (other classes and parents) about the topic you researched. Continue reading in order to learn more about this exciting project!

PARENTS, an important letter was sent home in the Tuesday envelope about the artifact and costume requirements for the Colonial Fair! Click here to download another copy of the letter, or click here to view it. If you have any questions, please email me.

PHASE I- RESEARCH REPORT OVERVIEW

Your group will select one of the following topics to research: education, trades, architecture, clothing, food, medicine, entertainment, daily life, or slavery. Each group has its own topic page on this wiki, which you can access by clicking on the link in the SideBar box on the right side of the screen. Your group's topic page includes a list of the focus questions that you will be researching and links to helpful websites, PDF documents, and book titles that you can use for researching your topic.

Each person in your group will research a different focus question about the topic. As you conduct research about your focus question, you will do all of your work on the wiki. Each student has his/her own Notes page, Rough Draft page, and Final Draft page on this wiki, which can be accessed from your group's topic page. As you research and take notes on the wiki, you must paraphrase information (put it in your own words) in order to avoid plagiarism. Also, you must keep track of all of the sources that you use for information.

Once you have finished researching and taking notes on your Notes page, you will write a multi-paragraph report about your focus question on your Rough Draft page. After everyone has completed their Rough Draft pages on the wiki, you will read each others' pages and provide feedback using the comments feature of the wiki. Carefully read the comments that have been posted on your Rough Draft page, and use the feedback to revise and edit your rough draft. Then, you will publish the "new and improved" version of your essay on your Final Draft page. You will also create a Works Cited list of all of the sources that you used for information.

PHASE II- COLONIAL FAIR OVERVIEW

Each group will dress up in colonial clothing, and set up a booth in the auditorium to inform visitors about the topic they researched. For example, there will be a food booth, a clothing booth, a medicine booth, etc.  Your booth will include the following:

  • a Q & A flap board (presentation board) with the focus questions and answers that your group researched and related pictures, diagrams, and illustrations

  • artifacts (models, samples, or supplies) related to your topic (For example, the clothing group may have samples of fabric, items used for mending clothing, a bonnet, etc)

In addition to creating a booth with a presentation board and artifacts, each group will also need to write a script and prepare a 5-minute presentation about their topic. For your presentation, you will pretend as if you are a person from colonial times and stay in character as you teach visitors about your topic.

(Yup, those are leeches!)
